Building the future of Mauritius’ Cultural Heritage: Progress at the National Archives and National Library site

The Ministry of Arts and Culture has made significant progress in the construction of  a building which will house the National Archives and National Library, both operating under the aegis of the Ministry. This landmark project located at Réduit Triangle, Moka  represents a vital step towards preserving the rich cultural heritage of our country and creating accessible spaces for knowledge, research, and learning.

Funded by the Government of India by a Line of Credit USD 13 million, the project involves a purpose-built complex sprawled over 2.82 acres.

During a recent site visit, Honourable Mahendra Gondeea, OSK, Minister of Arts and Culture was joined by His Excellency Mr. Anurag Srivastava, High Commissioner of India to Mauritius. Together, they reviewed the ongoing works, which have already reached 23% completion. The visit enabled direct engagement with engineering teams to address technical challenges and monitor project implementation.

The building will be a state-of-the-art facility equipped with modern amenities such as a humidity-controlled environment for preserving archival documents, energy-efficient natural lighting, and a modern reading room.

The project is expected to be completed by December 2026.
