Mauritius and Australia Explore New Avenues for Cultural Collaboration
The Honourable Minister of Arts and Culture had the pleasure of welcoming Her Excellency Ms Kate Chamley, Australian High Commissioner to Mauritius, at his office for a courtesy call marked by constructive and forward-looking discussions.
The meeting focused on reinforcing bilateral cooperation in the arts and cultural sector, with both parties expressing a strong commitment to developing meaningful partnerships. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening cultural links with the Mauritian diaspora in Australia, estimated at over 34,000 citizens, and ensuring they remain connected to their heritage and roots.
During the exchange, the possibility of having a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mauritius and Australia in the field of arts and culture was discussed.
Her Excellency further expressed her enthusiasm to collaborate with the Intercontinental Slavery Museum (ISM) for the upcoming dual exhibition on Constance Couronne and Furcy Madeleine .The story of Constance Couronne, a young slave from Mauritius holds an important place in history as she is the youngest known convict in Australia, having been deported from Mauritius at the age of 10 to serve a life sentence following an alleged poisoning offence.
Scheduled from 2 to 13 February at the International Slavery Museum, this exhibition is being organised in the context of the commemoration of the 191st Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery . It aims to shed light on the painful history of slavery , while highlighting the interconnected narratives between Mauritius and Australia.
