Port Louis Theatre Restoration Nears Completion After 17 Years

After nearly two decades of closure, the Port Louis Theatre—a crown jewel of Mauritius’ cultural heritage—is set to reopen its doors, with restoration works expected to be completed by August 2025.

During a recent site visit, Minister of Arts and Culture Mahendra Gondeea and Junior Minister Véronique Leu-Govind reviewed the progress of the renovation project.

The restoration aims to revive the theatre’s original splendour, including its sculptures, frescoes, and lighting design, while ensuring the space is ready to welcome the public once again.

“This theatre holds a special place in my heart,” said Minister Gondeea. “We are committed to bringing it back to life as a vibrant space for the arts, accessible to all Mauritians.”

Junior Minister Leu-Govind also highlighted the cultural and historical value of the project, noting that its reopening will serve as a symbol of artistic revival and national pride.

The Port Louis Theatre’s return is set to mark a major milestone in the preservation and promotion of Mauritius’ performing arts and architectural heritage.
