Workshop on Draft National Heritage Authority Bill Held to Strengthen Heritage Protection
A focused interministerial and Civil Service workshop on the draft National Heritage Authority Bill was held as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the legal and institutional framework for the protection of Mauritius’ national heritage.
The workshop brought together officers and representatives from relevant ministries and public institutions to examine the proposed legislation, share their expertise and provide their views before the Bill progresses further.
The Minister of Arts and Culture, Hon. Mahendra Gondeea, participated in the workshop and emphasised that protecting the country’s heritage also requires providing institutions with the appropriate legal framework and tools to act effectively.
Hon. Gondeea highlighted Government’s approach of encouraging consultation and dialogue before legislation is brought before the National Assembly. The contributions and recommendations gathered during the workshop will help refine the draft and contribute towards the establishment of a stronger and more effective framework for heritage protection.
The proposed National Heritage Authority Bill represents an important step in reinforcing the mechanisms available for the preservation, management and protection of Mauritius’ cultural heritage.
The Minister expressed his appreciation to the National Heritage Fund, as well as to all participating officers, ministries and institutions for their valuable contributions to the discussions.
He also thanked the Government of France, the Embassy of France in Mauritius and Expertise France for their support and cooperation in Mauritius’ ongoing efforts to strengthen the heritage sector.
