Rs 124 Million Upgrade for Le Morne Cultural Landscape

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Hon. Mahendra Gondeea, conducted a site visit at the Le Morne Cultural Landscape to take stock of the major upgrading works that will soon be undertaken at this emblematic site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

An allocation of Rs 124 million, announced in the 2026-2027 Budget, will enable significant improvements to the site’s infrastructure and visitor facilities, while ensuring that its authenticity and Outstanding Universal Value are fully preserved.

The project will include the redevelopment of the entrance to the site, the setting up of an administrative reception area, modern sanitary facilities, a rest area for hikers, a souvenir shop and improved parking facilities.

The road leading to the Open-Air Museum will also be fully rehabilitated as part of the project, contributing to improved accessibility and a better overall experience for visitors.

During the visit, Hon. Gondeea stressed the importance of striking the right balance between improving visitor facilities and safeguarding the historical, cultural and symbolic significance of Le Morne.

Particular attention is being given to ensuring that all interventions are carried out in accordance with UNESCO requirements. The works have been designed with the use of reversible materials and appropriate conservation approaches to minimise their impact on the heritage site.
