Historic Tribute to Anna de Bengal and Freedom Fighters at Fort Frederick Hendrick

On February 2nd, a historic tribute took place at Fort Frederick Hendrick, Vieux Grand-Port, marking the first time in 190 years that the State officially honored Anna de Bengal, a heroine of resistance, along with her fellow freedom fighters.

Their courageous struggle against injustice and slavery laid the foundation for the fight for liberty for all. This memorable day celebrated the bravery of those who defied oppression and opened the path toward freedom, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire the pursuit of justice and equality.

As Minister of Arts and Culture, Hon. Mahendra Gondeea emphasized the importance of remembering their sacrifice: “Freedom is not a given right—it is built every day by those who dare to fight for it. It is my duty to keep their memory alive and to ensure their legacy inspires future generations.”
