Workshop Highlights Commitment to the Preservation of Indentured Labour Heritage
An important workshop on the heritage of indentured labour in the Indian Ocean was organised by the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund in collaboration with the Ministry of Arts and Culture, bringing together stakeholders, researchers and heritage professionals to reflect on the preservation and promotion of this shared history.
The workshop provided a valuable platform for dialogue on the legacy of indentured labour and the need to strengthen research, regional cooperation and public awareness, particularly among younger generations. Participants explored ways to ensure that this important chapter of history remains relevant, understood and transmitted to future generations.
The initiative reflects the Ministry of Arts and Culture’s commitment to safeguarding the heritage of indentured labourers through meaningful action, including research, education, documentation and heritage preservation.
The Ministry remains dedicated to honouring the resilience and contributions of the men and women who helped shape Mauritius and the wider Indian Ocean region, while ensuring that their legacy continues to enrich the nation’s identity and collective memory.
