Mauritius embarks on National Convention for the Arts and Culture

The Ministry of Arts and Culture officially launched the National Convention on Arts and Culture on Friday 5 September 2025 at the Municipal City Council Port-Louis. This initiative marks a milestone for the cultural sector in Mauritius, creating a dedicated platform for dialogue, collaboration, and strategic planning.

The Convention, which began with the visual arts sector, will continue over the coming weeks with sessions for other artistic and cultural domains. Each sector will have the opportunity to share experiences, raise challenges, and put forward recommendations. This inclusive approach ensures that all voices contribute to shaping the future of arts and culture in Mauritius.

Giving a Voice to cultural stakeholders

In his opening address, the Minister of Arts and Culture, Hon. Mahendra Gondeea, OSK, described the Convention as a promise fulfilled to the artistic community:

“This is not just a meeting between the Ministry and artists. It is a platform for all stakeholders to express their views, share their vision, and provide recommendations for the future of our cultural sector.”

He added that the Convention aims to build a lasting impact:

“We wanted to ensure that every artist, every sector, and every stakeholder has a rightful place in this process. What we are building together is meant to be solid and sustainable.”

Clear Objectives

The Convention is designed to achieve several key goals:

  • Provide a space for all cultural actors to be heard;
  • Align the cultural sector with the national vision of developing a creative economy;
  • Foster collaboration between artists, academia, civil society, and the private sector;
  • Identify priorities for future action;
  • Support the National Arts Open Commission in preparing a strategic plan with short, medium, and long-term measures.

Stakeholders who are unable to attend in person are invited to submit their contributions electronically on .

A National Movement

The launch of the National Convention on Arts and Culture is more than just an event, it is the beginning of a national movement. By gathering ideas, talent, and energy from across the sector, Mauritius is laying the foundations for a stronger creative industry, new opportunities for the younger generation, and a renewed cultural presence on the international stage.
