125th Birth Anniversary of SSR: Ministry of Arts and Culture leads national tribute to the Father of the Nation

Mauritius  paid solemn tribute to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR), the Father of the Nation, on the occasion of his 125th Birth Anniversary, through a series of commemorative events organised by the Ministry of Arts and Culture.

The programme included the launch of a First Day Cover on SSR, an exhibition on “The Life and Legacy of SSR” at the City Council of Port Louis, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the Port Louis Waterfront and the Kewal Nagar SSR Memorial Park. These initiatives were designed to honour the enduring legacy of SSR and ensure that his vision continues to inspire future generations.

At the official opening of the exhibition, Prime Minister Hon Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam highlighted SSR’s profound contribution to nation-building: “As we commemorate the 125th Birth Anniversary of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, we remember not only the political leader but also the humanist, the reformer, the person who inspired the Nation to believe in itself.”

The exhibition, curated under the leadership of the Ministry of Arts and Culture, retraces the life, vision, and achievements of SSR as Mayor of Port Louis, Prime Minister of Mauritius, and Governor-General. It also reflects his pioneering role in making education accessible to all, establishing the University of Mauritius in 1965, promoting social justice, and building a fair and inclusive society.

The commemorative event was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Paul Raymond Bérenger; Ministers; Junior Ministers; Members of the National Assembly; members of the Diplomatic Corps; and several other eminent personalities.
